The old story goes...
Born in Radiant Garden and swept away at a young age for reasons she never learned, Kairi lived her childhood under the pristine, blue skies of Destiny Islands with her closest of friends, Riku and Sora. Life was simple, innocent, and exciting for she and her friends until she found out of her adoption and that she was really from another world of sorts.
She was, in time, convinced by Riku, as was Sora, to build a raft. Their plans were straight forward: to seek out other worlds. This came to be quicker than they anticipated though. And in the most unlikely of ways. The door in the old cave suddenly opened to other worlds. And with it, the heartless poured in. Kairi lost her heart that day and disappeared.
Her body was later found by Riku, but her heart's location remained a mystery for some time. Riku, convinced that he could revive Kairi, bartered with Malificent and did her dirty work so he could search every world he could come by for a solution. During that time, Riku fell further and further into darkness until eventually Ansem, the dark one behind everything, claimed Riku's body for his own. When he and Sora finally met at Hollow Bastion, Riku was gone and Ansem revealed to Sora that Kairi's heart had been locked away inside of Sora the entire time.
After Sora fought and defeated Ansem-Riku, he used the dark keyblade that Riku had gained possession of and released Kairi's heart. She awoke just in time to collect herself and try to catch Sora. He vanished before she had the chance. Ansem appeared at that time, expecting to finish them off. However, Riku temporarily took control again, giving her, Goofy, and Donald time to escape.
They made their way down floor by floor, but heartless were pouring out now that the door had been opened by the seven princess of heart. One odd heartless seemed to have followed them though. Kairi, convinced it was Sora, defended it against another swarm of heartless. It did indeed turn out to be Sora. He returned to his true form and helped Donald and Goofy battle the rest of the way out of the keep.
They returned to Traverse Town to regroup and figure out how they would stop the heartless and bring Riku back. Kairi wanted to go with Sora, but the boy refused. A compromise was made though. Kairi gave Sora her charm and had him promise to return it, essentially asking him to promise to return. Sora agreed to this and soon afterward left to return to Hollow Bastion and face off with Ansem.
Kairi was forced to wait.. until some mysterious force projected herself to the same place that Sora was just as the door to Kingom Hearts was shut. They briefly made heartfelt conversation before Kairi was pulled away and taken back to Destiny Islands where she has resided since.
Rechaining Memories: An AU
Kairi returned to living on the island, but the memories of her time away remained. She tried to explain to her friends about her journey, but the more she talked about it, the less they seemed to understand. And sometimes, she found herself at a loss of how to explain one thing or another which caught her off guard and had her friends even more unconvinced. Eventually, she gave in to just keeping the memories to herself.
In the meantime, Sora was in Castle Oblivion having his memories slowly altered by Naminé. It was due to Kairi's connection with him that she was being almost equally affected. This might have changed at the end of Sora's journey at the castle when he decidedly admitted that he wanted his original memories back, but that wasn't to be. Though Sora was convinced it was the right thing to do, he did not want to forget Naminé either. And that put a wrench in her plans, making it a much slower and taxing process.
Kairi's memories became even more intensely clouded. She eventually became convinced that it was only Riku she was waiting for and whatever memories she had remained solely in her sleep when she would dream of other worlds-- with the occasional nightmare of the time she lost her heart. This caused Kairi to become even more distant from her island friends though. She knew the memories were important, so why could she only really recall them in an unconscious state?
Until, quite suddenly, she was hit with a few memories that she had never had before in the middle of the day. She thought she was going a little crazy until Tidus approached her, looking intense with excitement. He was blabbering on about how there really were other worlds. He'd seen them before. Kairi could have sworn she was seeing someone else's smile in his grin. Regardless, the both of them were soon accompanied by Wakka and Selphie who also suddenly knew of other worlds. It was confusing but a bonding experience at the same time. Kairi could suddenly connect with everyone again. She felt more like herself.
It was only a few days afterward though that a man in a black coat appeared on the island. While they tried to defend themselves, they were unsuccessful and Kairi, Selphie, Wakka, and Tidus were quickly captured and taken away. They were imprisoned in The World That Never Was for reasons they had not a clue. They would never find out either. Before they could, Kairi fell suddenly unconscious. When she had awoken, she found herself with Axel who had decided to help her escape. They were to travel the worlds in search of Sora's memories. She would serve as their vessel. Kairi was confused though. Who was Sora and why could she hold his memories?
Her question went unanswered. They were chased for what felt like forever until a dark portal sent her from her world into the Dressing Room. Things haven't been the same since.
The Truth
While Kairi had returned to her island life and Naminé was in the process of trying to restore Sora's memories to their rightful state, Xion had been pulling memories from Sora's Nobody, Roxas, making things even harder. While Xion decided to take the right path in the end, she was captured by Axel and reprogrammed. This caused her to fight and ultimately absorb Roxas. Losing herself, Xion decided to return to Sora then and absorb him as well. She was, however, confronted by Riku instead who defeated and destroyed her.
This was not without consequence though. Roxas' last will to be who he was caused the memories inside of Xion to burst and scatter into the other worlds into other people who Sora had befriended. It was also in the chaos of the Aftermath that Naminé and Sora were both found and taken by Saix. Xemnas planned to use Naminé to find Sora's memories and ultimately use him.
Riku tried to force his way into the Organization's keep, but it was pointless. There were too many Organization members to fight against and too many nobodies. He was instead forced to tail and prevent them from taking the others until he could figure out a solution.
In the meantime, Saix had pin-pointed Destiny Islands and sent Luxord to collect those on the island that would most likely have scattered bits of Sora's memories. This saw to the capture of Kairi and the others where the memories would have been extracted had Axel not intervened. He had been convinced by Naminé that if they pieced Sora back together, he might see Roxas again. In the mean time, Naminé would alter Kairi's memories enough so that she and Sora could remain separate entities throughout the process of their memory hunt. If she were to begin remembering him while being him while being herself... Well, safe to say, it wouldn't end well.
Believing in Naminé, Axel sought out Kairi who was unconscious at the time due to Naminé's alterations. With additionally seeing Xion in Kairi, the red head sought atonement for Xion's capture by taking Kairi and escaping to seek out Sora's memories. He intended to explain all along about the reason why they were traveling as they were, but he never did have a chance. One desperate dark portal left an unsuspecting Kairi hurtling into the Dressing Room.

While it released her heart though, it also released Ansem. While it foiled the key from releasing Riku's heart, too, it put him in shabby shape. Despite this, Riku took on Ansem while pushing for Kairi to escape- and that was the last she had seen of Riku. It was Donald and Goofy that had her safely taken back to Traverse Town before they went off to find Riku and presumably defeat Ansem. She had not seen him since and waited patiently on the island until Axel's sudden appearance. She doesn't understand who Sora is and why he would need her help, but Kairi was never one to let someone down. And with Axel's words, it seemed that it might even be something only she could do.
